I had kids that weren’t listening and treating me like their personal maid, and I had a husband who wasn’t helping and treating me like his personal assistant.
I kept thinking that the problem with other people not listening to me when the problem was I wasn’t listening to me.
There is a quote that says:
How true that is, my family was only a reflection of how I was treating myself. What’s a mom to do?
I’ll tell you what to do. Here is how you can set boundaries for you that get followed and help you to increase your success rate not only with your family but in other life areas.
Here goes the Mompreneur Boundary Setting Credo:
Now onto the boundary setting, for you.
- Make sure that you know what you’re working toward and that the directions are clear. If they aren’t clear you will find yourself not following through and creating ways to be distracted.
- Be consistent in following through. Create some accountability around this boundary. I have a boundary set for myself not to spend money without a plan (you know the random, oh I saw some shoes girl, that’s me), so my husband is my accountability partner to help me go over my purchases and make sure they are in alignment with my financial goals and yes I actually take stuff back that don’t fit into my goals. Continue using your accountability until you are able to do it consistently on your own.
- Finally be compassionate with yourself. For whatever reason you have had an upper limit around this and learning how to stay within your own rules is new. You will make slip-ups and will totally fuck up. But, that’s life and know you have a baseline and it should be easier to auto-correct with each mistake. Embrace the mistakes and research and development and you’ll spend less time beating yourself up.
